Exciting Update: GridScale AI Transformers Now Ready for SMRs, LED by Valar Atomics Ward 250!
Posted on September 20, 2025
We’re thrilled to share a groundbreaking milestone for GridScale AI! Inspired by Valar Atomics’ innovative Ward 250, our engineering team has tweaked our modular transformer design to support Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), including the pioneering Ward 250, which we believe is best poised to lead the SMR race. This enhancement marks our entry into the nuclear energy market, delivering cost-effective, reliable solutions tailored for the future.
Why This Matters
Valar Atomics’ Ward 250, a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, sets a new standard with its TRISO fuel and helium-cooled design, ideal for powering AI data centers and off-grid applications. Our transformers, already celebrated for rapid deployment and affordability, now meet the unique demands of SMRs like Ward 250. With voltage ranges from 13.8 kV to 345 kV and an MVA capacity scaling from 10 MVA to 100 MVA, GridScale AI is ready to support a wide array of SMR applications, from small-scale deployments to large gigasites.
Meeting Strict Regulations
Our updated design complies with the following key standards to ensure safety, reliability, and performance in SMR environments:
• IEEE C57.12.00: General requirements for liquid-immersed distribution, power, and regulation transformers, ensuring robust design and testing protocols.
• IEEE C57.12.10: Specific standards for liquid-immersed transformers, guaranteeing insulation and cooling efficiency.
• IEEE 693: Seismic design for power transformers, rated for 0.5g acceleration to withstand earthquakes in SMR co-location sites.
• NRC/IAEA Guidelines: Nuclear Regulatory Commission and International Atomic Energy Agency standards for radiation tolerance and safety, protecting against nuclear-specific hazards.
• ANSI C57.12.90: Test code for transformers, ensuring compliance with short-circuit and thermal performance under SMR loads.
These certifications reflect our commitment to delivering transformers that meet the rigorous demands of nuclear energy, inspired by leaders like Valar Atomics.
Entering the SMR Market
By adapting our design, we’ve ensured compatibility with SMRs, including Valar Atomics’ Ward 250, alongside NuScale VOYGR, Holtec SMR-300, and GE Hitachi BWRX-300. Our scalable 10 MVA to 100 MVA range allows a single transformer style to serve diverse reactor sizes, maintaining low production costs ($50k-70k per 10 MVA) through mass production. This tweak not only enhances our market reach but also supports the global push for sustainable energy solutions.
